Janssen Infectious Diseases & Vaccines

Infectious diseases account for 15% of all deaths worldwide each year.[1] Therefore, we at Janssen are committed to the fight against infectious diseases; from viral hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to pathogens of global concern. We strive to discover and develop novel therapeutics and vaccines to help prevent, treat, improve treatment outcomes and ultimately healing of infectious diseases worldwide, thereby improving the lives of patients.

Our areas of focus for infectious diseases

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

The virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has completely transformed life across the globe. As of the 12th of May 2020, more than 4.17 million cases have been reported across 187 countries and territories, resulting in more than 286,000 deaths.[2]

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

A virus that can cause serious respiratory infections (infections of the lungs and airways) with symptoms ranging from a common cold to bronchiolitis and pneumonia (inflammation of the airways). RSV infection can occur at any age but is a particular threat during childhood and for the elderly.[3]

Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV

Human Immunodeficiency Virus HIV remains one of the greatest global health challenges of our time; it is estimated that 36.9 million people are currently living with HIV globally, with at least 1.8 million more becoming newly infected each year.[4]

Tuberculosis (TB)

One-third of the world’s population is currently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB, and anyone infected has a ten percent chance of suffering from TB during their lifetime.4 Although TB is curable and preventable, without proper treatment up to two thirds of people who develop active TB may die.[5]

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Chronic HBV infection is potentially life-threatening, putting people at high risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. It is a major global health problem, and the most widespread form of hepatitis worldwide with an estimated 240 million people chronically infected.[6]

Pathogens of global concern

We are dedicated to improving the health of humanity through research and collaborations which can enable a fast and efficient response to global health crises caused by outbreaks of pathogens such as Ebola, Zika and Dengue.
